Executive Director Search

Washed Ashore has been growing quickly in the last 8 years! Founder, and current Executive Director, Angela Haseltine Pozzi is looking forward to working with a new Executive Director as she focuses solely into her roles as Artistic Director and Lead Artist. We are looking for someone to join our team of collaborators and lead us forward to reach our full potential as an environmental and educational non-profit with the arts at the center.

Salary range: $60-65,000 DOE

Overview of Organization

Washed Ashore’s mission is to build and exhibit aesthetically powerful art to educate a global audience about plastic pollution in the ocean and waterways and to spark positive changes in consumer habits. Since its beginning in 2010, Washed Ashore has engaged all ages and abilities from its local community in Bandon, Oregon to an international audience, to create art that saves the sea. In 8 years over 20 tons of garbage has been picked up off Oregon beaches and processed into over 70 works of art. These art pieces have become ocean ambassadors and have toured to more than 30 locations around the nation including the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. and the United Nations in NYC. The traveling exhibits have been viewed by over 20 million people.

The organization was founded in 2010, as a project of Artula Institute for Arts and Environmental Education. Washed Ashore has grown exponentially since its beginning. The founder, Angela Haseltine Pozzi took a vision and realized it, creating both a robust organization and incredible art. Angela has been both the Artistic Director and Executive Director since 2010. With support of the board of directors, staff and many funders, Angela is hoping to turn 100% of her attention to being Artistic Director and Lead Artist. This shift provides opportunity for growth, expansion and capacity building for Washed Ashore while also generating an exciting opportunity for an ideal candidate to practice dynamic leadership for an innovative, growing nonprofit organization on the Oregon Coast.

The headquarters of Washed Ashore reside in Bandon, Oregon. Bandon is a unique place, shaped by the nature and beauty of the Southern Coast of Oregon. Wild woods and streams, stunning quiet beaches with beautiful ocean vistas and friendly neighbors make Bandon a special place to live.



Overview of Executive Director Position

The Executive Director is a professional position stationed at the Artula Headquarters in Bandon, Oregon. The Executive Director is responsible for co-leadership, with the Artistic Director, of Artula Institute’s future projects and the organization’s current sole project, Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea. Both the Executive Director and Artistic Director report to the Board of Directors (hyperlink board of directors page here). The Executive Director is responsible for Board Relations & Administration, Finance, Personnel/Human Resources, Resource Development, Communications, Marketing and Sales of the organization. Exciting and upcoming projects for the Executive Director include support of expanded marketing, resource development, a capital project and supporting the recently revitalized strategic plan. The position is based in Bandon, Oregon and requires living either in Bandon or a nearby town.


Key Selection Criteria

The ideal candidate will have the following experience & qualifications.

  • Fiscal management including budget development, monitoring and management
  • Superior communication skills with diverse groups and individuals
  • Donor development including maintaining current donor relationships
  • Positive, visionary and empowering leadership skills with experience managing diverse staff, systems and tasks
  • Bachelor’s degree minimum, masters preferred
  • Resource development, including grant writing & management
  • Experience authoring and leading strategic plan operations
  • Experience working with nonprofit board of directors
  • Minimum seven years of full-time management experience, minimum five years (paid capacity) in fields of arts administration, business administration, senior non-profit management, human resources, finance, grant writing, education or relevant field
  • Willing to relocate to Bandon, Oregon (or nearby area)


Additional Professional & Personal Experiences, Qualifications & Attributes

The following experiences and attributes are preferred in an ideal candidate.

  • Previous experience in arts administration preferable
  • Executive nonprofit management experience
  • Experience in or strong appreciation for the visual, literary, performing or media arts
  • Personal or professionally demonstrated history of commitment to environmental issues and community involvement
  • Ability to interface with diverse levels of business, civic, volunteer and donor groups
  • Connections/contacts with art and/or museum communities
  • Knowledge of principles of marketing, public relations and communications
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, adept at public speaking
