GALVESTON ISLAND
Together, we’re turning trash into treasure - Texas style.
The Galveston Park Board and Washed Ashore are teaming up to create something powerful: a community-built marine debris sculpture that raises awareness, sparks conversation, and inspires change.
This pilot project is the first of its kind, and we’re just getting started.
About the Project
For the first time outside of Oregon, Washed Ashore is bringing its unique process of transforming marine debris into large-scale art to a new community, right here in Galveston Island. In partnership with the Galveston Park Board, local artists and dedicated volunteers, we’re collecting, cleaning, and sorting plastic waste from our beaches to create a lasting public sculpture that celebrates the spirit of this coastal city.
This one-of-a-kind piece will stand as a symbol of what’s possible when art, community, and conservation come together, and will act as a powerful tool to educate and inspire change around plastic pollution.
Interested in bringing a Washed Ashore project to your city?
It’s a unique opportunity to showcase your community’s commitment to sustainability and environmental leadership, while engaging residents in meaningful, hands-on action.

Become a Change Maker: Volunteer Opportunities
At Washed Ashore, we believe that small acts make a big impact. We’re inviting residents and visitors to join us in making art that makes a difference.
We’re looking for volunteers to help with:
- Organizing and participating in beach cleanups
- Sorting and cleaning collected debris
- Attending hands-on workshops to prepare materials for the sculpture
Whether you’re local or just passing through, we’d love to have you be part of this effort.
